All students must be immunized against designated diseases in accordance with applicable state laws and regulations, unless a valid medical or religious exemption applies. The school district of residence shall maintain an official certificate of immunization as part of each student’s health record, as required by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. A copy of this record must be provided to the Intermediate Unit upon the student’s enrollment.
A student may be exempt from immunization requirements if a parent or guardian submits a written objection on religious, moral, or ethical grounds, or if a licensed physician certifies that the student’s medical condition contraindicates immunization. Students who are not immunized in accordance with state requirements shall not be admitted to or permitted to attend Intermediate Unit programs unless they qualify for an exemption or are provisionally admitted. Provisional admission may be granted by the Executive Director, in consultation with the district of residence, when the student has begun a required multi-dose vaccine series and provides proof of immunization or a medical certificate by the fifth (5th) school day of attendance.
Students experiencing homelessness who are unable to provide immunization documentation shall be admitted in accordance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
Students in foster care and those transferring from another school within the Commonwealth shall be admitted in accordance with applicable laws and regulations and will have thirty (30) days to submit proof of immunization, a medical certificate outlining a plan to complete a required multi-dose series, or documentation supporting an exemption.
All student health records are confidential. Information contained in these records shall be disclosed only when necessary to protect the health of the student or others, or to a physician upon written request from the parent or guardian.
